On the 29th January 2008, the Kurdistan Regional Government Nordic Representation hosted its first ever Kurdish Gala inOslo, Norway at the Radisson SAS Scandinavia Hotel. The Kurdish Gala is part of a concept to recognize the many Kurdish talents living in the Nordic countries as well as showing appreciation to the numerous friends of the Kurds that have shown their support throughout the years.

 The event was held at the Radisson SAS Scandinavia Hotel and artists included, Baxan, Naman and a famous Kurdish dance group. The host of the evening was Kurdish-Swedish comedian Özz Nujen who also won the Kurd of the Year award in Sweden last year.  Guests included several renowned cultural personalities, representatives from the business world, politicians and NGOs.  The Kurdish Gala was also held in Stockholm and Copenhagen during the same week and one of the highlights of the galas is the prestigious award ceremony for the Kurd of the Year, the Friend of the Kurds and the Friend of the Kurds Honorary Award. In Oslo, the recipients of the awards and the jury’s motivations were as follows:  

Friend of the KurdsAnja Breien

Anja Breien is one of Norway’s most famous film directors and has during the last years travelled to the Kurdistan Region where she portrayed everyday life in a female prison. In 2006 Breien gave out a book titled “Kaniaw” about a young Kurdish women’s upbringing in Norway and describes the Kurdish nation in a warm and charismatic way. Anja Breien is also a frequent contributor in debates about traditional migration culture and its meeting with the European reality.   

The Kurd of the YearRaouf Saraj

Raouf Saraj, originally from Iraqi Kurdistan attracted a lot of attention during 2007 as the main character of the Norwegian film ”Winterland”. Saraj has with his cinematic role help highlight and spread Kurdish culture to a larger audience.  

The Kurd of the Year – Honorary Award

Jon Rud, now a retired lawyer, worked closely with the UN in Geneva for several years and is a specialist in Human Rights Law including right of asylum. Jon Rud was the Chairman of Amnesty International in Norway and is the founder of the Norwegian Committee for Kurdish Human Rights – RKR.  In recent years, Jon Rud expanded his interest for the Kurds by playing an active role in the ’EU-Turkey Civic Commission’, a yearly conference held in the European Parliament since 2004 in order to supervise Turkey’s adjustment capacity towards EU’s criteria.
